Beam and block floors

Precast concrete beam and block floors are routinely used for ground floor construction. Where it is more appropriate for MFS to control the design and installation of the ground floors, our on-site teams can readily undertake this element to complete the substructure works.

The beams usually comprise 150mm or 225mm deep pre-stressed beams (depending upon the imposed loads) with standard 100mm deep building blocks, spanning between the beams.

H+H Celcon Floor Block

MFS’s preferred solution is to use the H+H Celcon floor block which has the benefit of improving the thermal performance, reducing the weight and, more importantly, lowering the ‘y’ value.

By varying the beam centres and groupings, a variety of loading conditions can be accommodated.
The beam and block floor is then ready to be screeded by the following trades once the structural shell is complete and watertight.


Precast concrete floor planks

MFS commonly uses pre-stressed precast concrete floor planks for developments such as flats/apartment blocks, care homes or for the upper floors of luxury private houses.

Each installation of floor planks and concrete staircases begins with a bespoke design tailored to the development. Planks are available in different depths to suit design requirements, while the plank length is custom-made to each location.

The supporting wall block strengths, acoustic performance and imposed loads must be considered prior to design and production of the floor plank units. At MFS we coordinate all these aspects of design to ensure the design is produced smoothly and the installation is right first time.

Usually, the manufacturers of the floor planks are responsible for the crane installation of the product. MFS supervises the works and coordinates activities with the site teams to ensure a smooth installation process.

Once installed, the planks provide a fire and sound-resistant level from which the upper floor construction can be started. The planks also afford greater flexibility with masonry partition layouts.


Engineered timber floors

One of the key components in the MFS system build process is the inclusion of designed engineered timber floor systems.

Sometimes referred to as I-Joists / I-Beams, or Open Metal Web, the I-joist is a man-made engineered wood product which has incredible strength in relation to its size and weight. This is achieved by combining an engineered composite web with high-grade softwood or plywood flanges.

The resulting joist can be installed more easily and with greater accuracy because of the manufacturing tolerances. Infinitely more stable than a traditional timber joist, it eliminates many of the common defects associated with traditional timber joist installation, such as the squeaks and ceiling cracks resulting from shrinkage, twisting and warping as the installation dries out.

The ‘peel clean’ chipboard floor deck is laid immediately over the joists forming a weather-resistant working platform. Our on-site teams undertake the installation seamlessly, eliminating the interface between trades and the usual delays, and reducing the build time.

Given the versatility of Engineered Floor Systems, which offer greater spans, allow for easier installation of mechanical and electrical services, and reduce waste, it is easy to see why they form a valuable part of our system build process.


Cavity wall insulation

MFS’s preferred method of achieving the designed u-value to external walls (when building both leaves) is a fully filled cavity with glass fibre insulation cavity batts.

In Rå build applications of the Celcon Thin-Joint system, we invariably use  rigid foil-faced PIR / PUR insulation boards fixed to the outer face of the inner blockwork leaf.

The combination of the superior thermal properties of the H+H Celcon Aircrete block and either full or partial fill insulation produces a wall construction suitable for any application to meet the current Building Regulations and achieve the standards set out by the Code for Sustainable Homes.
