13 new homes and Crawley Borough Council’s first Passivhaus Project. The unique type of build, which was first developed in the early 1990s in Germany, focuses on enhancing energy efficiency with excellent thermal performance, exceptional airtightness and mechanical ventilation. Passivhaus builds have no draughts, with fresh air being continuously provided by mechanical ventilation. This provides high air quality while reducing condensation.

The homes are so thermally efficient that only minimal heating is required to maintain comfortable temperatures all year round.

Project Details

The project in Gales Place aimed to provide affordable homes within the development of six flats and seven houses all built to the internationally recognised Passivhaus standards, designed by by the Tooley & Foster Partnership, using their in house accredited Passivhaus Design Architect.

Cabinet member for Housing at Crawley Borough Council, Councillor Stephen Joyce, said: “This continues to be an exciting development for us as we see each stage of the project coming together. Not only are we providing much-needed council housing for the town but by investing in the Passivhaus system we’re reducing fuel bills for our tenants. I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing the finished result.”

Continuing this, Director for Westridge Construction Ltd, Martin Buckthorpe said: “The project is going very well and Westridge are excited to reach weather tightness two weeks early.”

All the properties were built using the H+H Celcon thin joint system, with 100mm blocks, 7N and 3.6N. MFS carried out all the masonry works, including the face brickwork, thin joint blockwork, 300mm cavity wall insulation, lintels, steelwork, pcc concrete floors and staircases (to the flats), engineered timber ‘I’ joists and plywood decking to the houses and the roof constructions including all craneage.
